Personal Branding

 Hello all,

This week in class we extended our understanding of theory of impression management and applied it to what our new readings have been about. That being what a personal brand is and how we create, maintain, and endorse our brands appropriately. Creating a personal brand online requires an attention to detail to in a variety of different categories including generating an online persona, having a consistent online presence, and some knowledge of online professionalism. Monitoring online reactions to content posted and listening to feedback is also a very important part of keeping messages from one's personal brand positive and help with creating next steps towards managing one's brand. We also learned that it is very important when crafting a personal brand to maintain a similar in person persona/characteristics as you do offline/IRL.

This is because if supporters/content consumers of your personal brand uncover a lack of authenticity within your content, is can be very detrimental to the reputation of the brand. With cancel culture so prevalent in today social climate, a misstep of this magnitude can become irreversible to your brands effectiveness and notoriety. It is always best to air on the side of caution when posting controversial, political, or sociological viewpoints because it may have the same effect even on your own personal social media accounts. This is a good segway into how one should conduct themselves in a professional manor online. This is important because potential employers today more often than not will ask for all of your social media accounts to vet your online footprint to ensure nothing there is no unsavory or "unprofessional" content being endorsed by you, which may fall back on the company they are hiring for.

Personally, i am always conscious of what things I post on the few social media accounts I own, and would never think to post anything that didn't already directly aline with my moral values/beliefs. I also would not want to be employed by anyone who wouldn't be accepting of those values and beliefs. So it's not too difficult to manage my online persona by keeping a sense of professionalism. However, I never really thought of using my online presence to brand myself until more recently. Very excited to learn more about how to do so in our upcoming classes!
