Blog #11: SPARCC Summary

Hello Again all, For this week's blog post I decided I would attend a student run presentation that covered the complexities, norms, and double standards that are shown while analyzing gender roles in hour music media. I decided to attend this presentation because I thought it would have the most significant/relevant findings that can be tied into current events happening today in music media. While attending this event I learned a number of many interesting thoughts, ideas, and insights into how gender roles are present in music media and how it affects our relationships with people of differing gender identities. This is is what I learned: Women are portrayed as passive objects within music media today which presenters believe to be very problematic in terms of its portal of women. Causing increase acceptance of objectification of women within our society. While also negatively influencing the minds of our youth who may not be able to discern the complexities of the objectifyin

Hello all, As a child I imagined that when I got older that I would be able to work multiple different jobs a week. Monday I would be a firefighter, Tuesday I'd see my patient at the hospital as a doctor, and by friday I would be flying from one tropical destination to another as a pilot. However, as I got older and realized a lifestyle I longed for as a kid was impractical to say the least. As I got older and became aware of the possible professions I would endeavour to pursue, the only thing that they all had in common was helping others however my talents would allow me. After graduating high school and coming to the mount I was set on pursuing a career in political science and business so I would eventually become a lawyer. But as I grew into adulthood and higher education my thought process begin to grow as well. I no longer had, what I would call a juvenile outlook on the world and realized that the world isn't as black and white as I imagined while i was younger. I beco

Personal Branding

Hello all,      This week in class we extended our understanding of theory of impression management and applied it to what our new readings have been about. That being what a personal brand is and how we create, maintain, and endorse our brands appropriately. Creating a personal brand online requires an attention to detail to in a variety of different categories including generating an online persona, having a consistent online presence, and some knowledge of online professionalism. Monitoring online reactions to content posted and listening to feedback is also a very important part of keeping messages from one's personal brand positive and help with creating next steps towards managing one's brand. We also learned that it is very important when crafting a personal brand to maintain a similar in person persona/characteristics as you do offline/IRL.       This is because if supporters/content consumers of your personal brand uncover a lack of authenticity within your content, i

Blog Post #5: Reflection of the Semester so Far

Hello my fellow bloggers, Happy to be back from spring break and to be sharing my thoughts with you all once again. Since taking COMM 373 Social Media I have learned a great deal about different definitions, phenomenon, viewpoints, and behaviors we as social media users may display or emulate through their online presence/footprint. One of the very several topics I have found fascinating while learning more about it was impression management. Impression management is a concept first introduced to us in the Goffman text in and is defined as "a conscious decision on part of the individual to reveal certain aspects of the self & to conceal other, as actors do when performing on stage" (Gottman 1959). I found this topic and definition to be very interesting because not only does impression management take place on out social media accounts daily, but it also takes place IRL (in real life) in most of our everyday interactions. I also very much enjoyed learning about the 3 rea

Impression Management Blog Post

Hello again bloggers, After this week's unit on Impression Management I have a good deal of thoughts and reflections I would like to share with you guys regarding this naturally occurring phenomenon. First I'd like to define Impression Management as it was defined to us in class this week.  According to the Stamp reading this week Impression Management is defined as "the process by which individuals attempt to control others’ perceptions, is pervasive in social interaction" (Stamp 2005). To sum up this definition in my own words, I'd say impression management is when an individual attempts to share parts of themselves with another that they believe will be perceived as favorable/likable. There are three main reason that were covered in the reading as to why we exhibit such behavior. A desire for social acceptance, a desire to maintain & develop relationships, and finally the desire to experiment with one's identity. Personally I don't really believe i

New Media Journal

Hello my beloved blog viewers, Last week in our COMM 373 Social Media students were asked to keep a log of their media usage for a week to observe what our personal media consumption general looks like. I was very interested to find out what my media patterns would look like over the course of the week, so I decided to physically journal out each time I used my phone or laptop while providing a brief description of the purpose and the duration of the usage taking place. The results of this quick self evaluation was quite eye opening.  I found the ogging to be much less tedious than I originally anticipated. I usually make a conscious effort not to be on my phone too often. Especially when I first wake up and when I am with other people. I don't like checking messages too early in the morning because I feel as if it will affect my initial productivity for the day. Luckily having swim practice every morning helps keep me from putting any attention to my social media accounts when I w

First Blog Post! :)

Hello my fellow web watchers, My name is Gregory Afolabi-Brown and I am currently a senior studying communications at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg Maryland. I was born and raised only an hour away from the my college in the city of Gaithersburg. A fun fact about me along with my two older sisters and twin brother is that we are all first generation Americans. My mother was born and raised in London England and my Father was born and raised in Lagos Nigeria (my mother's parents were born in the same city as my father). I am also a division one level swimmer who's been swimming competitively for over 15 years. However, after I graduate I will be hanging up my goggles for the last time and will begin a new chapter in my life.  I enjoy working out and staying active as much as I can. Which made swimming the most ideal choice for me. When covid-19 first hit and all fitness facilities were shutdown I felt as if I was losing my mind not being able to go to the gym or
